Orlando, Florida is the theme park capital of the world—and when it comes to unforgettable vacations, Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort are at the top of everyone’s list.
But with four Disney parks, four Universal parks, including the brand-new Epic Universe as well as the amazing Volcano Bay Waterpark, and countless magical experiences to choose from, how do you decide where to go?
As a vacation planner specializing in Disney destinations and Universal vacations, I’m here to break it all down and help you pick the best fit for your family, travel group, or next big adventure.
Walt Disney World Resort: 4 Parks of Classic Magic
Walt Disney World offers a massive vacation experience with four distinct theme parks, two water parks, a huge shopping and dining district (Disney Springs), and more than two dozen themed resorts. It’s the perfect destination for guests of all ages.
Why Walt Disney World Is a Family Favorite
Walt Disney World is built with families in mind—from toddlers to grandparents. With a wide variety of attractions, entertainment, and dining experiences, there’s truly something for every age and interest. Many rides have no height requirement at all, making it easy for the whole family to enjoy them together. Plus, the parks offer baby care centers, rider switch for families with younger children, and character meet-and-greets that create unforgettable memories. Disney makes it easy for families to explore, play, and dream together. The four theme parks are:
Magic Kingdom - ✨ Where fairy tales come to life
This is the most iconic park, home to Cinderella Castle and classic attractions like Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, and Space Mountain. It’s divided into themed lands like Fantasyland, Adventureland, and Tomorrowland. You’ll find beloved characters, dazzling parades, and fireworks that light up the sky each night. It's the ultimate “Disney” experience and perfect for everyone from first time visitors to Disney experts.
EPCOT - 🌐 A celebration of innovation, culture, and cuisine
EPCOT is split into two main areas: World Celebration/Discovery/Nature, which highlights technology and exploration, and World Showcase, which features 11 countries with unique food, entertainment, and architecture. Must-do attractions include Test Track, Soarin’, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, and Spaceship Earth (inside the iconic big geodesic sphere).
Disney’s Hollywood Studios - 🎬 Step into the movies
This park immerses you in the magic of film and television. You can ride Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, shrink down in Toy Story Land, and take a thrilling elevator drop in The Twilight Zone: Tower of Terror. It’s home to Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway and live shows like Beauty and the Beast and Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular.
Disney’s Animal Kingdom - 🦁 Where adventure meets nature
Animal Kingdom combines a traditional theme park with a zoo and lush landscapes. Expedition Everest, Avatar Flight of Passage, and Kilimanjaro Safaris are fan favorites. The park focuses on conservation and storytelling, with real animals, exotic lands, and the stunning Tree of Life at its center.
Or, maybe you’re thinking about a trip to Universal Orlando Resort?
🎢 Universal Orlando Resort: Big Thrills & Blockbuster Adventures
Universal Orlando Resort is known for its thrill rides, cutting-edge technology, and deeply immersive lands. Whether you're chasing thrills, walking in the footsteps of your favorite movie characters, or looking to splash the day away, there’s a park for everyone in the family. Universal Orlando is home to three theme parks and one incredible water park—each with its own unique experience.
Is Universal Orlando Family Friendly?
While Universal Orlando does have a few areas designed for younger kids—like Seuss Landing, Minion Land, and play zones throughout the parks—it’s best known for its big thrill rides and intense attractions that cater more to teens and adults. Height requirements are higher than what you’ll find at some other destinations, and much of the theming leans into action, adventure, and darker stories. If you're traveling with little ones, there’s still fun to be had, but families with toddlers or sensitive riders may find fewer options that truly fit their needs.
🎬 Universal Studios Florida - Be a part of the movies!
Universal Studios Florida is where movie magic comes to life. Here, you can explore the streets of New York and San Francisco, giggle with Minions in Minion Land, and dive into the wizarding world of Harry Potter with a visit to Diagon Alley. Hop on thrilling rides like Revenge of the Mummy or Transformers: The Ride 3D, or take a stroll through the shops and snacks of the Wizarding World. With a Park-to-Park ticket, you can even board the Hogwarts Express from King's Cross Station for a magical ride to the next park!
🦖 Universal’s Islands of Adventure - Thrills, heroes, and magical lands
This park is packed with action and adventure. This park is the original home to immersive lands, whether you're racing through the jungle on VelociCoaster, casting spells in Hogsmeade, or swinging through the city with Spider-Man, there’s no shortage of excitement here. Islands of Adventure is also home to family-friendly areas like Seuss Landing, which is more family friendly. It’s a park where epic stories come to life and the thrills are around every corner.
🌋 Universal’s Volcano Bay - A water park paradise
Volcano Bay is not your average water park—it’s a fully immersive tropical getaway built around the mighty Krakatau volcano. You’ll find everything from daring drop slides to relaxing rivers and sandy beaches. The best part? The park uses TapuTapu wearable technology to hold your place in line virtually, so you can chill in the wave pool or float down the lazy river while you wait. It’s the perfect blend of excitement and relaxation, especially on those warm Florida days.
🌌 Epic Universe (Now Open!) - The future of theme parks
Epic Universe is Universal’s newest theme park—and it's already making waves! This park will bring new worlds to life, including Super Nintendo World, How to Train Your Dragon, Dark Universe (where you can come face-to-face with classic movie monsters!), and an expansion of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. With cutting-edge attractions, immersive storytelling, and jaw-dropping lands, Epic Universe promises to be a game-changer in the theme park world.
So…Disney or Universal? Let’s Find the Right Fit for You
Whether you're dreaming of pixie dust and parades or pulse-pounding coasters and movie magic, both Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort offer unforgettable vacations—just with very different vibes.
Choose Walt Disney World if you're looking for timeless storytelling, family-focused attractions, and magical moments for all ages. It’s especially great for families with younger children or multigenerational groups who want variety, charm, and plenty of options for everyone.
Choose Universal Orlando if your crew is full of thrill-seekers, teens, or movie buffs ready to dive headfirst into fast-paced rides and immersive worlds. With Epic Universe now open, there’s never been a more exciting time to visit!
