When to Avoid Walt Disney World in 2027 (And When You Should Go Instead)

Here's something most families don't realize until after they've booked: the exact same Walt Disney World vacation — same parks, same hotel, same fireworks — can feel like a dream or a drag, and the only difference is the week you picked. Skip the special events and school breaks, and you can trade three-hour lines for walk-on rides, swap a sunburn for a light breeze, and pocket real savings on your room.

And speaking of savings — the timing on this post couldn't be better. Just this morning, Walt Disney World dropped its first major wave of 2027 discounts:

  • Save up to $250 per night on select 4-night, 4-day (or longer) room-and-ticket packages, for stays between January 3 and July 28, 2027

  • Save up to 25% on select Disney Resorts Collection rooms, for stays between January 3 and April 29, 2027

  • Disney Visa Cardmembers can save up to 30% on select rooms for stays January through July 2027

These offers tend to sell out fast, so if a 2027 trip is even on your radar, it's worth locking in dates sooner rather than later.

That's the fun part of my job as a travel advisor: I get to match your trip to the calendar's sweet spots so you get all the magic and none of the grind. Here's my month-by-month cheat sheet — and when you're ready to lock in your dates, that's where I come in.

The Quick Version

Your best bets: early-to-mid September, the first three weeks of May, mid-to-late January, early June, and early November tend to offer a nice balance of manageable crowds, favorable weather, and better value. These windows can give you a much more comfortable Walt Disney World experience without having to travel during the traditionally lowest-crowd periods.

Trickier windows: the week of Christmas through New Year's, spring break (mid-March through mid-April), Thanksgiving week, mid-June, and the days surrounding the Fourth of July come with bigger crowds and bigger price tags. Even within these busier periods, I can often help you find a quieter park day or a better-value room within your dates.

January

Crowds: Low to moderate (with two big exceptions)

Weather: Cool and pleasant, occasional chilly snaps

The first few days of January are packed with New Year's holdovers, and the runDisney Marathon weekend (typically the second week) brings a surge of runners and their families. The very last weekend of January can also get a jolt from cheer and dance competitions, which fill hotels with teams and their families. But once you get past mid-January and dodge that final weekend, this is one of the calmest stretches of the year. Bonus: EPCOT's International Festival of the Arts usually kicks off mid-month.

Best window: January 20–31

February

Crowds: Moderate to high

Weather: Mild, still cool

Presidents' Day week and the runDisney Princess Half Marathon weekend both bring crowds, and Valentine's Day adds a romantic bump too. February is also prime season for cheer and dance competitions, which can quietly fill up resorts and add extra energy (and extra lines) to the parks, especially on weekends. If you can dodge the third week of the month, February is still fairly manageable. If those dates are your only option, I can help you build a touring plan that keeps things smooth even on a busier week.

March

Crowds: High to very High,

Weather: Warming up nicely

March is spring break season for a huge swath of the country, and EPCOT's Flower & Garden Festival launches, drawing garden lovers and foodies alike. It's also one of the biggest months for cheer and dance competitions nationwide, so on top of spring break travelers, you'll often see teams and families filling hotels and parks on competition weekends. Expect steadily climbing crowds as the month goes on, especially around Easter if it falls early.

Best window: 1st week of March to avoid the beginning of Spring Break Crowds

April

Crowds: High to very high

Weather: Warm, comfortable

Easter and peak spring break travel collide here, making April one of the most crowded months of the year — especially the first two weeks. If you can wait until the back half of the month, after spring break wraps and before Mother's Day travel, crowds ease up considerably and the Flower & Garden Festival is in full, beautiful bloom.

Best window: Late April, roughly the 20th onward

May

Crowds: Low to moderate (until Memorial Day)

Weather: Warm, getting humid

May is a genuine sweet spot. Schools are still in session for most of the country, spring break is over, and summer crowds haven't arrived yet. The first three weeks are consistently rated among the best times to visit all year — just watch out for the surge that starts around Memorial Day weekend.

Best window: May 1–20

June

Crowds: Moderate early and late; high in mid-June

Weather: Hot and humid, afternoon storms common

June is a bit of a split month. Early June can still bring moderate crowds, while the middle two weeks typically see a noticeable jump as summer vacation gets fully underway. By late June, crowds remain elevated but can ease slightly compared with the mid-month peak. Expect hot, humid weather and frequent afternoon thunderstorms throughout the month. If you’re willing to visit earlier or later in June, you may get a better balance of manageable crowds and summer vacation weather.

July

Crowds: Moderate to low, dropping after the week of 4th of July

Weather: Hot and humid, peak storm season

July is the peak of summer travel, capped off by a very busy Fourth of July week. This is Disney World at its liveliest and most sweltering. Summer is often the only window that works for school schedules, and that's completely fine — I can help you pick the right resort and park strategy to keep the heat and crowds from stealing the fun.

August

Crowds: Moderate, dropping to low as school starts

Weather: Hot — often the hottest month

Early August still carries summer-break energy, but as schools around the country start back up, crowds drop noticeably. The last two weeks of August are consistently among the lightest of the entire year. The tradeoff is the heat: expect feels-like temperatures well into the 100s.

Best window: August 17–31 (heat-tolerant travelers only)

September

Crowds: Very low

Weather: Hot, but easing by month's end

This is often called the best all-around month to visit Disney World — and for good reason. Once Labor Day passes, crowds drop to some of the lowest levels of the entire year, hotel prices dip, and the Food & Wine Festival and Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party are both running. The catch is the heat, which lingers through most of the month.

Best window: September 8–30

October

Crowds: Moderate with high crowds rising to high after the 2nd week

Weather: Cooling off nicely by late month

October can be a fantastic time to visit, but crowd levels vary significantly throughout the month. Early October tends to be more manageable, while weeks two and three can bring some of the highest crowds of the month. By the final week, crowds often begin to ease again, temperatures are more comfortable, and Halloween festivities are in full swing. If you’re looking for the best balance of weather and crowds, the beginning or final week of October is generally a better bet than the middle of the month.

Best window: October 23–31

November

Crowds: Low early, spiking hard at Thanksgiving

Weather: Cool and comfortable

Early-to-mid November is calm, pleasant, and a great time to visit. Thanksgiving week brings a bigger, more festive crowd as the holiday season kicks into gear — if that's the only week that works for your family, I can help you snag dining reservations and Lightning Lane picks early, before they disappear.

Best window: November 1–19

December

Crowds: Moderate early, extremely high after the 20th

Weather: Cool, occasionally chilly

December is a tale of two halves. The first two to three weeks are surprisingly calm, and holiday decorations, the Christmas tree at Magic Kingdom, and seasonal overlays are already up — meaning you get the festive atmosphere without the peak crowds. Once the week before Christmas hits, though, crowds explode and stay elevated through New Year's.

Best window: December 1–18

Putting It All Together

A Few Final Tips

  • Weekdays beat weekends almost everywhere on the calendar — Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday tend to run lighter than Friday through Monday.

  • Watch for runDisney race weekends (January, February, and April are the big ones) — they bring in thousands of extra visitors even during otherwise quiet weeks.

  • Keep an eye on cheer and dance competition weekends, especially January through March — these events fill hotels and parks fast, and they're easy to miss when you're just checking a crowd calendar.

  • If heat is a dealbreaker, target October through early May instead of peak summer.

  • If low crowds matter most, September is hard to beat — just pack accordingly.
